Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: A Comprehensive Case Summary

Dr. Swarnamuki BVerified·

As a practitioner of Yoga & Naturopathy holding a Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS), my clinical focus includes lifestyle disease management, diet and nutrition, mental health and stress management, obesity and weight management, and mud therapy. I frequently manage complex neurological cases that benefit from a holistic and multifaceted approach. In this article, I present a clinical case summary detailing the integrative rehabilitation of a post-stroke patient.

Case Presentation

A 51-year-old male presented to clinical care with right-sided hemiparesis and speech impairment following a left middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction. Upon clinical evaluation, the patient exhibited significant neurological challenges, including difficulties with speech production, language comprehension, and recognition abilities.

Integrative Rehabilitation Approach

To address the multifaceted needs of the patient following the left MCA infarction, an integrative rehabilitation approach was adopted. By combining traditional therapies with natural and movement-based modalities, we aimed to support comprehensive recovery. The treatment plan incorporated:

  • Naturopathy
  • Therapeutic yoga
  • An individualized diet
  • Physiotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Targeted exercises
  • Mind-relaxation techniques

Focus on Motor Recovery and Functional Improvement

While the rehabilitation program addressed overall cognitive and physical functions, specific modalities were prioritized to target functional independence. Acupuncture and targeted rehabilitation techniques were particularly focused on supporting motor recovery (addressing right-sided hemiparesis) as well as language functions, including Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas.

With consistent treatment, the patient showed significant improvement in right-sided motor function, speech, and overall functional ability. The combined approach of acupuncture, exercise, yoga, and relaxation techniques contributed positively to his rehabilitation.

Conclusion

Integrative care allows us to address both the physical manifestations, such as motor deficits, and the broader systemic and lifestyle factors involved in recovery. Through this structured combination of therapeutic yoga, physiotherapy, acupuncture, and lifestyle modifications, patients receive a well-rounded strategy designed to support their rehabilitation journey.
