CASE STUDY: INTEGRATIVE NATUROPATHY MANAGEMENT FOR KNEE PAIN & DIFFICULTY IN WALKING
As a practitioner specializing in Yoga and Naturopathy, with expertise in lifestyle disease management, diet therapy, mud therapy, naturopathic physiotherapy, and obesity and weight management, I frequently encounter elderly patients presenting with overlapping musculoskeletal complaints and systemic comorbidities. This case study details the clinical management of a 72-year-old female patient utilizing an integrative naturopathic approach.
Patient Profile and Presenting Complaints
A 72-year-old female patient presented with significant difficulty in walking—particularly when attempting to get up—alongside bilateral knee pain, reduced mobility, and functional discomfort.
Her relevant medical history included:
- A history of a fall resulting in a left femur fracture
- Left femur plate fixation surgery performed in 2025
- Systemic hypertension
- Bronchial asthma
Laboratory Investigations and Medical Collaboration
Baseline evaluations included a thyroid profile, which revealed the following result FT3: 11.500 pg/mL FT4:5.520 TSH: 0.011 IU/mL Anti-TPO:22.20 IU/mL (Negative, according to the laboratory reference range)
These findings were suggestive of hyperthyroidism. Consequently, the patient was referred to a General Physician for further evaluation and was subsequently initiated on 10 mg of anti-thyroid medication under medical supervision. Her regular antihypertensive medication was also continued as advised.
Provisional Assessment
Clinical assessment of the patient identified multiple interacting conditions:
- Flat foot
- IT band stiffness
- Degenerative joint disease (DJD) of both knees
- Obesity
- Hypertension
- Insomnia
- Difficulty in walking
Integrative Treatment Approach
To address the patient's multi-systemic needs, a comprehensive, individualized naturopathic and supportive care plan was implemented:
- Foot and Postural Correction:The patient's flat foot was addressed using appropriate footwear correction and support to optimize weight distribution and improve walking mechanics.
- Physiotherapy and Exercise Therapy: To manage bilateral knee degeneration and pain, a structured rehabilitation program was initiated. This included Interferential Therapy (IFT), exercise therapy, targeted knee-strengthening exercises, and mobility and functional exercises.
- Lifestyle and Supportive Care:The broader treatment plan was structured to improve mobility, reduce joint discomfort, support weight management, and promote better sleep.
Clinical Progress Over 10 Days

Furthermore, her blood pressure decreased from 160/90 mmHg to 140/80 mmHg, and her body weight reduced from 92.2 kg to 89.8 kg.
Conclusion
This case underscores the clinical value of an integrative and multidisciplinary approach when managing elderly patients with complex musculoskeletal complaints and multiple comorbidities. By systematically addressing foot biomechanics, joint rehabilitation, strengthening exercises, weight management, sleep disturbances, and appropriate medical management, practitioners can successfully help improve patient mobility and overall quality of life.
