An Encouraging Journey in Chronic Kidney Disease Management: A Case Study
As a practitioner of Yoga & Naturopathy with a BNYS and expertise in Clinical Dietetics, Diet Therapy, Fasting Therapy, Integrative Clinical Practice, and Integrative Pain Medicine, I often encounter complex, multi-system health challenges. I am Dr. Darshaniya Natarajan, and I would like to share an encouraging case from my clinical practice highlighting the management of Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) alongside multiple comorbid conditions.
Clinical Presentation
A 60-year-old female patient presented with a complex medical history. She was diagnosed with:
- Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
- Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
- Systemic hypertension
- Anemia
- Bronchial asthma
- Lumbar spondylosis with radiculopathy
- Bilateral knee osteoarthritis
- Grade II obesity
- Insomnia
- Gouty arthritis
Her initial assessment on 10 September 2026 established baseline laboratory markers: an estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) of 22.8 mL/min/1.73 m², a serum creatinine level of 2.2 mg/dL, and a hemoglobin level of 8.8 g/dL. She was subsequently admitted for inpatient care on 21 September 2026, weighing 81.2 kg.
Treatment Approach and Progress
During her initial treatment period, the patient received conventional care alongside a specialized treatment approach focused primarily on CKD management. Given her extensive list of associated health conditions, a targeted dietary management plan was implemented, emphasizing restricted protein intake, controlled carbohydrates, and fibre-rich foods.
By the time of her discharge on 30 September 2026, measurable clinical improvements were observed:
- Serum creatinine decreased from 2.2 mg/dL to 1.4 mg/dL.
- eGFR increased from 22.8 mL/min/1.73 m² to 35.4 mL/min/1.73 m².
- Body weight reduced from 81.2 kg to 79.6 kg.
Following structured home-care advice and ongoing dietary modifications, the patient returned for follow-up and readmission on 5 October 2026, at which point her weight was recorded at 80.3 kg. Continuing the integrative protocol yielded further positive outcomes by 13 October 2026:
- Serum creatinine further decreased to 1.3 mg/dL.
- eGFR improved to 41.8 mL/min/1.73 m².
- Body weight further reduced to 77.6 kg.
A Journey of Hope and Confidence
Adapting to a comprehensive treatment programme can initially present challenges for any patient. In this case, however, observing measurable, encouraging changes in her clinical parameters significantly strengthened the patient's confidence and cooperation. Through comprehensive guidance, she gained a deeper understanding of her various health conditions and recognized the vital importance of continued care.
Conclusion
This case demonstrates encouraging changes in kidney-function markers through the combination of conventional care, a specialized CKD-focused treatment approach, and precise dietary management.
While the specific details of the special treatment protocol are not disclosed here, its approach and individual suitability can be discussed through direct clinical consultation. Ultimately, this patient's journey emphasizes the indispensable value of strict medical supervision, dedicated follow-up, and a comprehensive, integrative approach to health restoration.
